Last night I got biiiz-ay!
I mentioned in a previous post how I was just going to screw labels and definitions and do what I want with my gluebook. I had decided to give up my big blank Proart sketchbook that was reserved for a different project and just use it to go wild in. I was thinking it would be like an art journal, but I have no desire to actually “journal” in it. Paste down/write random words as part of the art, sure…. but no journaling.
SO I finally did that last night!
Seduce the Skin

What I did: I promise you it doesn’t look -that- drab. It is just a tiny bit, but it does look pretty nice. Anyway… ages ago I glued down the face on the loft and the rest just kinda sat there until last night. I whipped down a layer of Gesso and then broke out my acrylics and ended up mixing up a flesh tone. I’ve never made such a lovely flesh tone before :-p And I usually don’t premix. But I always go by the seat of my pants, so there ya go. I spread the fleshtone paint all over and ended up putting down browns and smooshed that around a bit. Then some pink and… I don’t know. Just went at it. THEN I decided to play with my punchinilla someone kindly sent me from an Y! group I’m in. I just used black metallic paint on that left side, flipped it over to where the wet side is down and pressed it down on the right side, then bottom and top. So I’m in love with that stuff. Then while waiting for it to dry, I read somewhere online about doing image transfers with Modge Podge. I got all giddy over this (being broke and not being able to obtain proper transfer materials), I tried it. I grabbed a random image I had printed up and kept for drawing reference (on the right) and tried it out. It worked, which surprised me. It left a lot of paper residue behind… I kinda rubbed it off. That worked okayish. THEN I tried a sheet of music paper that came from a book and that left even more paper residue but it did transfer. Yay! I’m so proud of my first glueart book spread!
Then, because I didn’t want to waste my leftover tan colors and pinks…
Canvas WIP

I just started spreading it out on this little canvas and ended up going nuts (you know what I mean, once you start the momentum…) and spooged on more brown, pink, got my fingers in on the action and this is where I stopped. I was thinking about putting a tree on it, but I think I found something else to do. Now, if only I can find my damn carbon paper that disappeared when I needed it most…. >.<
I didn’t stop there, though.
Red Cutie

What I Did: I’m a sucker for red heads ;-) This is a spread I did where I painted first, then added the image. I Gesso’d then just spooged out some blue and red paint and started spreading with a brush. I tried the image transfer with Modge Podge again but I think the paint was too dark for it to show up well and too much paper stuck. When I tried removing the paper, a lot of the image kept coming up. So I broke out my metallic silver paint and painted over the remains of the image, and added a bit to the other side. I ended up adding the lady over the failed transfer part. She fits perfectly there. don’t know where else to go with this at the moment.
Textured Gesso Bond

What I did: I really liked the newest Bond movie, so I squee’d when I saw this guy’s pic in a magazine. I actually had thus guy originally on a black metallic-type tissue paper background before I transfered him to this book. The tissue paper didn’t want to participate, so I said screw it. I Gesso’d and decided to try the “textured Gesso” technique and ran the point of my brush through the left side and a bit on the right. Last time I tried that it was on canvas and it didn’t work. But I think because I used it on paper it made a difference somehow *shrug* I don’t know anything, I just DO it and cover my mistake up as I go lol So I waited for that to dry and took a ColorBox Fluid Chalk Inkpad (yellow citrus) and rubbed it all over the gesso. I purposely went lighter and heavier here and there and left some areas white. Then I stole roommie’s VersaCraft (poppy red) inkpad and did the same as the yellow but got all the white space. Oh wait… I think I did red first… bah! Same thing :-p I really like how the halo around Bond looks. And the texture’d gesso shows up nicely. So that’s another new technique for me.
AND…. my new toy: Portfolio Series Water Soluble Oil Pastels!
I made a bit of money fixing an awesome lady’s necklace and I decided, hey… this is the exact amount I need to get those oil pastels I’ve been drooling over. I haven’t got anything for myself in ages (months?) so screw it, I’m getting them. As soon as I get home I tried them out on a naked, unprepped page. Ewww when it got wet! Duh, I proly need to gesso first, because of the paper type. But I like how smooth it feels when they go on and from what I can tell, they’re be a constant in my stash :)
Soo… yay for me. I’m pretty psyched about how everything has came out so far. To all the people who are too scared to try, just DO it! Trust me, I have no talent. All you have to have is the ability to decide if something looks good or not. Just get a book, gesso, paint and just have at it. You’ll see what I mean!
Now, off to gesso a page for those oil pastels…
